Merry Christmas from the Gibsons to you!

Wil and I are leaving for Japan in 2 days. Yes, we are flying on the Christmas day...it was the cheapest day to fly. We will leave our apartment around 3 am on the Christmas morning. I can't wait to see my family and friends.

Bad news is, I have been sick for last three days. This strong bug has been going around in the office last few weeks, and I finally got it. Luckily I am feeling much better today. Little weak still, but much better. I'm hoping Wil won't get this. So far, he is okay. Darma seemed very happy to have mommy home for the last few days. She was right next to me wherever I was. I think she knew I wasn't feeling well. What a sweet girl!! I hate to leave her here for 10 days at the kennel, but I think she will be okay.

Since we won't be home for Christmas, we did our Christmas last Sunday. We opened our gifts and had a good day. I got a new robe, bread maker, and GLEE Christmas CD! Thank you Wil! I have been using my bread maker and I love it. I baked white bread so far, but I want to try making cinnamon rolls after we come back from Japan.

Vancouver B.C.

Museum of Anthropology, UBC
Here are some of the pictures from our trip to Vancouver B.C. over the Thanksgiving holiday. Vancouver has lots of good Chinese food for really cheap! Our first three meals, we had authentic Chinese food. I won't write down everything we did, but Vancouver is a very cool town! We will definitely go back there in the summer when weather is nicer.

Museum of Anthropology, UBC

My favorite was the public market at Grandville Island. It was a walking distance from our hotel, so we walked there in the morning. It's like Pike
Place Market, but bigger. I had panacotta gelato for breakfast. Best breakfast ever! We were fortunate to have the sunny weather on our second day there.

Walking to Grandville Market
Grandville market

Needless to say, Darma was very happy when we picked her up after spending three days apart. She slept the whole day and a half straight on the couch. She must have not slept well at all at the kennel. Poor Darma...

Christmas market, downtown Vancouver

First Nation Artist Bill Reid

Atsuko and I went to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia last Thursday.  There we saw some of the work of Rill Reid.  The piece below is Raven and The First Men, it depicts humanity being tricked by raven to to come to the surface and is part of the Haida creation story.

Wow, it's 2 more weeks until Thanksgiving! This November is going very fast for me. My boss is gone this month for an expedition in Papua New Guinea. The fall color has passed its peak at the garden, yet Japanese Maples are coloring beautifully right now. When the sun hits in the morning, those colored leaves shine  beautifully.

Our Vancouver trip is coming up soon! I have to research more and decide what we are going to do. Several people told me that the restaurants there are amazing. Can't wait! I hope Darma will do well at the kennel. It's only 2 nights, so it will be a good practice before we go back to Japan.

I'm going to put the tree up after we come back from Canada! Here comes the holiday season. Yes!

Fog!

Earlier this week, the valley was covered in fog.  It was crazy to look down and not be able to see anything at all.  My commute to work took me right through the middle of it all.  Going down the hill and into the valley was strange as you entered the low cloud.  You couldn't even see the tops of some of the five and six story buildings.

Pictures!

Amelanchier pseudocamellia
I borrowed a camera from work one day and took bunch of pictures. It's fun to take pictures! My camera (or I should say Wil's camera) won't show the color well.  Enjoy the fall color at RSBG!

Eddie Bauer

I received the holiday catalog of Eddie Bauer in the mail today. I love flipping through their catalog because they have a lot of black labrador knick knacks. Cushion covers, snow globes, Christmas ornaments, etc...I just love them! I wish they were a little cheaper though. Eddi Bauer's headquarter is located in Seattle. Last year, Wil got this snow globe for our 1st year anniversary. It's just perfect for us because there are the sign for Seattle and bunch of Darmas! I can't wait to put up the tree!

Fall

At work, Fall Foliage Festival is coming up this weekend! It's a week long festival and free admission for everybody during that week. We offer tours and classes for free as well! I am teaching a terrarium class this Saturday (which I need to prepare for). Since I will be working next two Saturdays, I got tomorrow off. I like having a day off on weekdays. Wherever I go, it won't be so crowded. Wil and I made mistake to go to the outlet mall last weekend, but I couldn't shop because it was just way to busy.

After this event, it should slow down at work. So Wil and I are going back to Japan this winter! We found a really good kennel for Darma. I wish we could take her with us... Anyhow, we will be in Japan from Dec. 26th to Jan. 3rd. I know it's a short stay, but we didn't want to leave Darma too long. We are going to Kyoto from Dec 28th to 30th, but rest of the time, we will be in Tokyo.

Also, during the Thanksgivig holiday, we will visit Vancouver B.C. for 3 days. I've never been to Canada before, so I can't wait! I 've been researching all about Vancouver. I love planning for trips. We will take a bunch of pictures!

School And Work Starts Monday

I start school again on Monday.  I will be taking three classes, that is nine hours of class each week.  On top of that ACE Language Institute has asked me to teach a level one and a level six class.  I'll be working around twelve to fifteen hours a week.  Hurray!

Anthropologie

One of my favorite stores, anthropologie. I want to buy everything in that store! I was in downtown Seattle over the weekend, and found this earl gray fragrance at anthropologie. I have never heard of earl gray perfume before, but surprisingly it was very calming scent and I loved it. I didn't buy it because I have Bath & Body Works body spray called 'white tea and ginger' which is similar scent, but now I'm thinking about going back...hmmm.

Family Visit

It's been a while since I posted last time. My mom, aunt, and grandmother visited us from Tokyo and we had a wonderful time together.  We had lots of good food, saw Seattle Mariners game (although we lost the game big time), visited the rhody garden, spent some time with Darma...and more. It was only 5 days, but we did so much that it felt like weeks! Darma looks very confused when the company from abroad leaves. She looks really sad... I bet she's waiting for them to come back!
Things are going well these days. Busy at work, but weather has been awesome. Days are getting shorter and shorter. It's dark by 8:30 PM now. The pictures are some things in bloom in the garden right now. All the lilies are started to bloom and adding some colors! Lillium michauxii is about 9 feet tall and orange flowers hang down. One of my favorite lilies!  We started collecting seeds for propagation. So far, we collected trillium, Meconopsis (blue poppies), primroses, peonies, and more to come. I enjoy collecting seeds and cleaning them. Before we know, leaves will start turning colors and fall will come!

Vanda

Vanda orchid bloomed in the conservatory at RSBG. Stunning color and beautiful venation! This is one of my favorite orchids. Orchids are epiphyte, which means they just sit on another plant without taking nutrients from that plant. In wild, they grow in the tree fern trunk!

One Year With Darma

We found Darma at the Seattle Humane Society on July 5th of 2010.  Yesterday marked the end of her first year with us.  As a treat for Darma, Atsuko wanted to make her a cake.  But when she got it...

Darma's Favorite Toy

This toy used to belong to Lappu, the Shiba that we had in Tokyo. After his passing, my mother sent this toy for Darma. Ever since, it has been her favorite toy. We call it Dango, which is Japanese for dumplings. We name all the toys she owns, and she seems to identify each one of them. When we ask her "where is Dango?" , she brings Dango. If we ask her "Where is squeaky?", she will being candy cane shaped toy that we call squeaky.

Anyhow, Dango has a squeaky ball in the middle dumpling. See how it is squished and holey?  Well it's because that's the only part she chews. I have mended it twice, and I discovered two more holes today.  I took it away from her so she won't make the holes bigger, and put it on the mantel. Now she sits in front of the fireplace and stares at it. Dango is absolutely her favorite toy! I really think she can smell Lappu on Dango.

Summer Quarter Starts Monday

I start Intensive English Grammar tomorrow and have class 6 hours a day for the next week.  It's only one week but, it will be long.  Next week, I start my other two courses for the summer.  Those will last a total of 4 weeks.  Nothing to bad from the sound of it.  I won't have my grades for my last two courses for another week or so.  I wish they would get put up sooner.  I don't think I did bad or anything like that, I would just feel better knowing they are posted.

One Class Down

I turned in the final for Teaching ESL Writing this morning.  That means one class down, one to go.  I have my History of English Language final next Thursday, with the final class today.  I am looking forward to it, since it has been an interesting class.  I am expecting good grades for both, but will still keep my fingers crossed.

Himalayan Blue Poppies

It has been a extremely busy spring, but finally it started to slow down. I have been working 6 days, sometimes 7 days a week! At least I enjoy what I do, so it wasn't like a torture for me. Just the physical exhaustion. Anyhow, it has been really cold this spring so that we are approximately three weeks behind the normal blooming time. If you happen to visit the garden in the next few weeks, you MUST check out our Meconopsis Meadow. The blue petals are just unbelievably beautiful. This is the plant I fell in love with when I did my internship in Scotland in 2008.
I even brought back the seeds to AR, but there was no way they would have survived the hot summer in AR. They like cool summer.

I was walking through the nursery today and realized a robin was loudly making noise at me. Surely enough, I found there eggs in their nest on Rhododendron falconeri branch. These eggs were so little and so warm. I can't wait to see them hatch!

D&D @ D20 Games

Once or twice a month, I meet with a group of people to play through an adventure called Tomb of Horrors.  It puts our D&D skills to the test.  We have lots of fun while we are at it.  Last Sunday we met up for another session.  The store was filled with groups of people playing games.  It was a pretty fun Sunday.

Spring

It's Been Sunny Out

The weather here has been nice for a few days.  We get to see sun light, and blue sky.  I almost forgot what those things looked like.  Atsuko is enjoying herself at the conference in Vancouver, WA (not Canada).  She'll be home late tomorrow night.  Until then, it is just me and the dog.  The dog spend most of the day on the couch, but I've been getting here up and walking every few hours.

It's Nice To Be Done With Midterms

I actually only had one midterm, but I spent quite a bit of time on it.  I probably spent 4 hours working on the take home essay and another 10 to 15 hours studying with the other grad-students in class.  I'm crossing my fingers that I got a good grade.  To reward myself, I went and play in a Magic The Gathering tournament Saturday night.  Today, I volunteered for a few hours at the Rhody Garden then came home and read for this week.  Class work never ends!

I Like Having A Friend That Can Paint

I play Dungeons and Dragons with a guy that really knows how to paint.  A few weeks back, the character I was playing died.  I wanted to play something really different.  Before, my character was human.  Now, I am playing a Thri Kreen, a humanoid-insect.  I bought a pewter mini and asked the guy to paint it for me.  This is what the finished product looks like.  It's really neat!

I Hate Computers

After a few days of dealing with slow load times and random crashes, I finally decided to look into what was going on with our desktop PC.  I checked the RAM, it was fine and that's good cause I just bought it.  Nothing was overheating so I guessed the CPU was okay.  Then I noticed the little red hard drive light on the case would start until about 10 or so seconds after we tried to access something and when it did the computer froze.  It was the hard drive.

I bought a new one of Friday and spent most of the morning installing the part, then Windows 7, and after that updates.  At least I was able to read for class in between the computer needing my attention.  Luckily that night I was able to get all our information off the old drive.  I'm going to do a wipe of it and take it to a recycling center at some point.  The computer works great again, and we now have twice the storage on it and a faster drive in it.

I'm guessing the next thing to go will be a fan or two.  Those are easy to replace and I am fine with that.  I just hope nothing else really breaks... knock on wood!

Another Month, Another Session @ ACE

This week is the end of yet another session at the ACE Language Institute.  This will be the 5th session I have worked for ACE since quitting the merchandising position last fall.  It has gone by so fast.  It also means it is about half way through the spring quarter.  Classes are going well.  I meet with my History of the English Language professor this week to discuss a paper for his class that I want to do though it is extra credit so I may have to set it aside for other things.  The assignments I have done for my Teaching ESL Writing class have all recieved the highest mark, and I'm also a few days ahead on the readings.  All-in-all, things are going well.  When I finish this quarter I will have 1/5 of my MA program done, and be on my way to having 2/5 done when I finish out the summer quarter.

It's Sunny, And Summer School

It is sunny today.  I can't believe it at all.  You can see blue sky and everything.

I signed up for summer classes yesterday.  I will be taking an intensive ESL grammar course for one week from 9am to 3pm each day.  I am told that while boring it is an easy 3 credit hours... hurray!?  I will also be taking Teaching ESL Grammar, and Teaching ESL Listening/Speaking.  One will be online, the other only two days a week from 4:30 to 7:30pm.  I don't think it will be too bad.  I was really afraid my summer classes were going to make it hard to find time to work and ACE but I think I will have no problem with making time to tutor 3 or 4 students.

Atsuko With Flowers From Pike Place

Two Weeks Into The Quarter

It's been two weeks since the spring quarter started.  I'm full swing into both classes and working out a schedule to get all my classwork done.  I don't have much in the way of tutoring so it makes it a little easier, even though I am not getting paid as much.  At least I am meeting people and making connections.  History of the English Language is an amazing course.  ESL Writing is a little nerve wracking due to being online, but the materials are easy to read.

I was able this week to also grab a board game to play here and there.  Atsuko and I played last night.  We had fun.  We had played the original version of this game on our XBox 360 constantly up until a few months ago.  I have been itching to play in on a table instead of a TV, and now I have my wish!

Darma, are you hungry?

Darma cocks her head when we ask her if she is hungry. It's too cute!

Spring is here...?

Well, supposedly, spring is here. But the weather here has been so depressing. The news this morning said we haven't had a sunny day for 38 days straight. 38days!! Come on sunshine, come out already!

Working outside when weather is like this is not the joyful thing. I can't wait to work outside and not have to wear my rain coat!

Bad Weather, Good Grades

The weather here has not been the greatest this week.  Last week was amazing.  Sun, nice temperatures, and everything.  This week has been cold and rainy.  I had to walk Darma in very cold rain this morning too.  It wasn't fun at all.  Even with all the bad weather, I was able to snap this photo yesterday though.  This is just down the hill from our building on the main road into the complex.  Darma doesn't seem to mind walking through all the petals, and even with the cars it is pretty looking.

Tired And Sick

My mother left to go back to Northwest Arkansas this morning.  Unfortunately, I did not go to the airport to see her off.  Stupid head cold.  I feel like I have a watermelon up my sinuses.  I've spent half the day sleeping.  The other half was spent driving to get my textbooks.  There went $200, one of them was hardcover only.  I am sad to see my mother leave, but I am even more sad that I will spend the last few days of my vacation sick.  I need orange juice and sleep.
