Blue Poppies

 Picture says it all. The beauty of nature is just stunning. I would love to see this plant in wild someday! This particular blue poppies are Meconopsis 'Lingholm', which is the cross of M. betonicifolia and M. grandis. The secrets to grow this plant is,
1. They like rich soil
2. They like fertilizer
3. They dislike heat
4. Keep them watered during the summer season
 
 
 この植物が野生で育っているのをいつか見てみたい！とっても綺麗なこのケシ、今がピークです。この植物を育てるコツは、肥えた土に植える事、しっかり肥料をやる事、暑さから避ける事、そして夏場に水を欠かさない事。この４点さえ押さえれば、毎年花を咲かせるはずです。ただ、暑さが苦手なこのケシの花、アメリカでも育てられる地域は少なく、蒸し暑い東京ではまず育てられません。英国でも、スコットランドでは育てられても、ロンドンまで南下すると暑すぎて育てられない、と聞きました。

This is one of the plants that I saw in North Carolina. This Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid was at the Bildmore Estate Garden. I was on the tour with the horticulturist and he took us off the trail to see this special patch of wild flower. This is a pretty common wild flower, but it's very beautiful.

Yellow lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus parviflorum) is also native to Appalachian Mountains, but unfortunately I was not able to see that in wild.
Other plant that I was very excited to see was Trillium grandiflorum, Large-flowered Trillium. The very last day we were there, we took a drive to north of Asheville on Blue Ridge Parkway before we had to head to the airport. On the way to the airport, I spotted this patch of Trillium and I had to pull over! We actually sell this plant at the RSBG nursery, so it was interesting to see this plant in wild. I was absolutely gorgeous! believe or not, this pure 　　white flower turns or pink or rose color before it fades.

この蘭は、ノースカロライナにいるときにビルトモア・エステートの敷地内のガーデンで見ました。そこの園芸家にツアーをしてもらっていて、彼が特別な蘭がある、と見せてくれました。アメリカ東部では割と普通に見かける野草らしいけれど、とっても可憐で素敵な花！

キバナノアツモリソウ、この花の黄色バージョンも野生で見れるらしいけど、残念ながら私たちは見る事ができませんでした。（北海道でまれに見る事ができるそう）

見れて良かったもう１つの野草は、エンレイソウ！シアトルに帰る日、午前中時間があったのでBlue Ridge Parkwayをアッシュビルの北のほうへドライブしてたら、トリリウムが目に留まって車を止めました。坂一面に白い花は咲いてて、とっても綺麗でしたー！実はこの植物、職場のナーセリーで販売してるので、野生で育ってる姿を見れて良かったです。この白い花、しおれる頃にはピンク色に変わります。ウッドランドガーデンに最適な植物です。



Sam Knob Hike

シアトルに帰る前日、一緒に旅行してたクラリスとノースカロライナの山にハイキングしてきました。頂上に上る途中、たくさんのワイルドフラワーを見てたくさん写真とった！中でも、野生のブルーベリーやアジサイ、あともちろんシャクナゲも。思ってたより「これは何の植物、きっと何科に属するだろう」と分かって、自信がついた～！植物博士のボスのおかげです。頂上からの景色は絶景でした。

I hiked with my travel mate, Clarice, the day before we flew back to Seattle. We chose Sam Knob's hiking trail since that was recommended by local hikers. The view from the top of the mountain was just stunning!! Supposedly, we were able to see three states from there. Here is the link to more information of the hiking trail.

Spring 2012



Bloedel Reserve

I have been so busy at work and haven't had time to just sit down and rest!! We have had plant sales almost every weekend in April. So far, my favorite one was at Bloedel Reserve at Bainbridge Island. It was my first visit to Bloedel and I enjoyed the garden very much. It was so magical. They even had Japanese and moss garden! 

April 20th and 21st was our plant sale at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way. We had so many generous volunteers that made this event possible. We were all exhausted, but enjoyed out time very much. The outcome of the plant sale was stunning!

Spring is generally a busy season for horticulture field, but I really enjoy it. When you are busy, time goes so fast. This week, I will fly to Asheville, NC to attend a rhody conference. I have never been to the part of the US before, so I'm very excited to see the area! I am hoping to see the azaleas that grow wild in that area.

Here comes the blue poppies!!

 春は超多忙で、休みをとる暇もありません。先週は７日間ずっと出勤！４月は、プラントセールが毎週ありました。中でも、ブローデルのプラントセールはすごく良かったです！ブローデルは、シアトルからフェリーで行ける、ベインブリッジ島にあるガーデンです。初めて行ったのだけど、とっても素敵なガーデンでした！日本庭園と、苔ガーデンまでありました！とっても静寂な、素敵な空間でした。

４月２０、２１日は、私たちの植物園がプラントセールを行いました。２０店ものナーセリーが出店して、大成功のプラントセールでした。ボランティアの力なしには成り立たなかったセールです。彼らはほんとうに寛大で優しい人ばかり。



Blue Poppy Meadow

園芸の仕事をしてると春は忙しいけど、充実してます。時間があっという間に過ぎる。私は今週、ノースカロライナ州に出張で行ってきます。シャクナゲの会合に出席するために。東海岸は初めてなので楽しみ！野生のアザレアを見れるはず。

出張から帰ってくると、母の日の週末はガーデンツアーのイベント。その次の週末は青いケシのお祭りイベント。週末出勤続くけど、それが終われば少しは落ち着きます。

ちなみに、昨日、今年初のヒマラヤの青いケシが咲いてるのを発見しました！これから何百と開花していきます。この花大好き。写真の巨大ユリは、私よりも背が高いです。

Lanarth



Magnolia campbellii ssp. mollicomata ‘Lanarth’ bloomed at the garden. It's a very rare Magnolia with giant flowers. I have never seen Magnolia trees with this large flower before. I can spot this flower from distance because of the size and the flower color. One word to describe this flower; STUNNING!!


非常に珍しい木蓮が咲きました。ラナース、という、花が超巨大なマグノリアです。こんなに花が大きいマグノリアを見るのは初めて。花が大きいので、遠くからでもこの花を見る事ができます。この木はまだ１８０ｃｍくらいだけど、いずれは大きな木となり、春にこのピンクの花を咲かせます。花はあと数日しか持たないと思うけど、毎日ガーデンを歩くたびにその美しさに魅了されてます。



Woodland Garden

My favorite corner of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG). This picture describes the perfect woodland garden. Ferns, Erythronium, and Arisaemas...Love it!! I love this season when all the fern fronds are coming up. They are so delicate. The pink flowers are Erythronium revolutum, the common name is trout lily. There are literally thousands of Erythroniums blooming in the garden right now. I remember one of the first jobs I did when I just started working at the garden 2 years ago was to collect Erythronium seeds. We collect seeds every year and spread them all over the garden. They bloom in spring and go completely dormant by summer. Arisaema is the unusual woodland plant. The common name is Jack in the Pulpit. You can see two Aresaemas just coming up back of the pink flowers in this picture. We have Arisaema sisokianum planted all over the stumpery, as well as the garden entrance. They are not as hard to grow as you think!
 

ガーデンの中で、好きな一角。バランスのいいウッドランドガーデンの一角です。シダ、カタクリ、テンナンショウなど。この後ろに、大きなシャクナゲも植わってます。この時期、シダの新芽がでてきて、とってもデリケートで好きです。写真のピンクの花は、ユリ科のカタクリの仲間。ガーデンでは、何千とのカタクリが今咲いています。２年前この仕事を始めたとき、私の最初の仕事は、このカタクリの種を集める事でした。毎年種を集めては、ガーデン中に撒き散らします。春に花が咲いて、夏には完全に葉がなくなります。ナンテンショウもウッドランドガーデンに適している植物。写真の中で、ピンクの花の後ろに２つ見えてます（花はまだ咲いてないけど）外見から、育てるのが難しい、と思う人が多いようだけど、それほど大変でもありません。いま、私は植木鉢でアパートのパティオで育ててるけど、丁度花が咲くころです。

Cardiocrinum giganteum, the giant lily

This strange looking plant is Cardiocrinum giganteum, the giant lily from Himalayas. I saw this plant for the first time in Scotland where I completed my interniship in summer of 2008. It seemed every garden I visited had at least one of these lilies. Believe or not, when they bloom, the height could be up to 12 feet tall. Flowers are extremely fragrant, as most lilies are. It takes 7-8 years for bulbs to be big enough to produce flowers from seeds...patient, patient, patient!! They are monocarpic, meaning the bulb will die once it produced flowers. But don't worry, they will produce offsets, as seen in this picture. They bloom in June in our Pacidic Northwest climate. These bulbs are planted in the Meconopsis Meadow at the RSBG. Just pisture the beautiful sky-blue colored poppies with this white giant lilies in bloom at the same time...it would be amazing!


この植物は、ヒマラヤの巨大ユリです。（カーディオクライナム-ジャイガンティウム）この植物をはじめてみたのは、2008年の夏、スコットランドでインターンシップをした時でした。訪れた数々のガーデンで、必ずといっていいほど見かける植物です。何と、花が咲くと最高3.5メートルくらいの高さになります。（その年によって、背丈は違うけれど）花は、多くのユリのように、とっても香りが強いです。種まきから花が咲くまでの大きさになるまでは7－8年もかかるという、根気の要る植物です。このユリは、モノカーピック、といって、一度花を咲かすと死ぬ、という植物です（アガベと同じように）でも、写真で分かるように、死んでしまう前に赤ちゃん球根を作るので、完全になくなってしまうわけではないです。ここシアトルの気候では、6月ごろ花が咲きます。このユリは、ヒマラヤの青いケシが一緒に育ってるいて、青いケシの花と白い巨大ユリが同時に咲いているところを想像してみて！

My favorite...Rhododendron huianum

Just about to bloom

My absolutely favorite rhododendron is coming to bloom pretty soon. When I saw Rhododendron huianum for the first time last year, I was blown away by this beautiful flower. The bud almost looks like up-side-down grapes. When they open, the flowers are purplish-pink with pink calyx (as seen on the bottom picture). I mean, who would have thought rhododendrons could be this beautiful? Last year, only one flower bloomed at the RSBG because of the wet summer. This year, they are loaded with flower buds. If you are in the South Puget Sound area, stop by to see this stunning rhody!! (You won't see anything like this anywhere else...this plant is supposed to be very hard to grow)

私の一番好きなシャクナゲがもうすぐ開花します。学名の読み方は、ロドデンドロン-フイエイナム。このシャクナゲを初めて見たとき、この美しさに圧倒されました。つぼみは、逆さまのぶどうのように見えて、開花すると優しい紫色っぽいピンクの花びらと、ピンクの萼のコントラストがとても綺麗。シャクナゲはつまらない植物、というイメージを吹き飛ばすでしょ？！去年は、夏に雨がたくさん降ったせいで花つきが良くなく、たった１輪しか咲きませんでした。その分今年は花つきがとてもいいです。もし機会があれば、ぜひガーデンに立ち寄ってください～（このシャクナゲは、育てるのが難しいといわれています）
