Woodland Garden

My favorite corner of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden (RSBG). This picture describes the perfect woodland garden. Ferns, Erythronium, and Arisaemas...Love it!! I love this season when all the fern fronds are coming up. They are so delicate. The pink flowers are Erythronium revolutum, the common name is trout lily. There are literally thousands of Erythroniums blooming in the garden right now. I remember one of the first jobs I did when I just started working at the garden 2 years ago was to collect Erythronium seeds. We collect seeds every year and spread them all over the garden. They bloom in spring and go completely dormant by summer. Arisaema is the unusual woodland plant. The common name is Jack in the Pulpit. You can see two Aresaemas just coming up back of the pink flowers in this picture. We have Arisaema sisokianum planted all over the stumpery, as well as the garden entrance. They are not as hard to grow as you think!
 

ガーデンの中で、好きな一角。バランスのいいウッドランドガーデンの一角です。シダ、カタクリ、テンナンショウなど。この後ろに、大きなシャクナゲも植わってます。この時期、シダの新芽がでてきて、とってもデリケートで好きです。写真のピンクの花は、ユリ科のカタクリの仲間。ガーデンでは、何千とのカタクリが今咲いています。２年前この仕事を始めたとき、私の最初の仕事は、このカタクリの種を集める事でした。毎年種を集めては、ガーデン中に撒き散らします。春に花が咲いて、夏には完全に葉がなくなります。ナンテンショウもウッドランドガーデンに適している植物。写真の中で、ピンクの花の後ろに２つ見えてます（花はまだ咲いてないけど）外見から、育てるのが難しい、と思う人が多いようだけど、それほど大変でもありません。いま、私は植木鉢でアパートのパティオで育ててるけど、丁度花が咲くころです。

Cardiocrinum giganteum, the giant lily

This strange looking plant is Cardiocrinum giganteum, the giant lily from Himalayas. I saw this plant for the first time in Scotland where I completed my interniship in summer of 2008. It seemed every garden I visited had at least one of these lilies. Believe or not, when they bloom, the height could be up to 12 feet tall. Flowers are extremely fragrant, as most lilies are. It takes 7-8 years for bulbs to be big enough to produce flowers from seeds...patient, patient, patient!! They are monocarpic, meaning the bulb will die once it produced flowers. But don't worry, they will produce offsets, as seen in this picture. They bloom in June in our Pacidic Northwest climate. These bulbs are planted in the Meconopsis Meadow at the RSBG. Just pisture the beautiful sky-blue colored poppies with this white giant lilies in bloom at the same time...it would be amazing!


この植物は、ヒマラヤの巨大ユリです。（カーディオクライナム-ジャイガンティウム）この植物をはじめてみたのは、2008年の夏、スコットランドでインターンシップをした時でした。訪れた数々のガーデンで、必ずといっていいほど見かける植物です。何と、花が咲くと最高3.5メートルくらいの高さになります。（その年によって、背丈は違うけれど）花は、多くのユリのように、とっても香りが強いです。種まきから花が咲くまでの大きさになるまでは7－8年もかかるという、根気の要る植物です。このユリは、モノカーピック、といって、一度花を咲かすと死ぬ、という植物です（アガベと同じように）でも、写真で分かるように、死んでしまう前に赤ちゃん球根を作るので、完全になくなってしまうわけではないです。ここシアトルの気候では、6月ごろ花が咲きます。このユリは、ヒマラヤの青いケシが一緒に育ってるいて、青いケシの花と白い巨大ユリが同時に咲いているところを想像してみて！

My favorite...Rhododendron huianum

Just about to bloom

My absolutely favorite rhododendron is coming to bloom pretty soon. When I saw Rhododendron huianum for the first time last year, I was blown away by this beautiful flower. The bud almost looks like up-side-down grapes. When they open, the flowers are purplish-pink with pink calyx (as seen on the bottom picture). I mean, who would have thought rhododendrons could be this beautiful? Last year, only one flower bloomed at the RSBG because of the wet summer. This year, they are loaded with flower buds. If you are in the South Puget Sound area, stop by to see this stunning rhody!! (You won't see anything like this anywhere else...this plant is supposed to be very hard to grow)

私の一番好きなシャクナゲがもうすぐ開花します。学名の読み方は、ロドデンドロン-フイエイナム。このシャクナゲを初めて見たとき、この美しさに圧倒されました。つぼみは、逆さまのぶどうのように見えて、開花すると優しい紫色っぽいピンクの花びらと、ピンクの萼のコントラストがとても綺麗。シャクナゲはつまらない植物、というイメージを吹き飛ばすでしょ？！去年は、夏に雨がたくさん降ったせいで花つきが良くなく、たった１輪しか咲きませんでした。その分今年は花つきがとてもいいです。もし機会があれば、ぜひガーデンに立ち寄ってください～（このシャクナゲは、育てるのが難しいといわれています）

ぺナヨティ　クレイデスさんは、アメリカで有名なプランツマン。ロックガーデンの神と呼ばれれてるくらい（笑）デンバー植物園のディレクターです。彼が先週私のガーデンに来てました。その訪問についての彼のブログです。RSBGは、アメリカの中でかなり上位に入る、素晴らしい植物園だ、とコメントを残してくれました！（記事は英語だけど。）

Rhododendron himantodes

This is one of my absolute favorite lepidote rhododendrons. Rhododendrons have two categories: lepidotes and elepidotes. Lepidotes have scales on the plants (the brown dots in this case), and elepidotes don't have scales. Rhododendron himantodes has very distinctive flowers with distinctive scales. Those scales are what makes this plant attractive, in my opinion. First time when I saw this plant in bloom, I had no idea that such rhododendron existed. Rhododendrons are such a interesting Genus. This plant is native to Malaysia and Indonesia area.




このシャクナゲ、私のお気に入りのひとつです。シャクナゲには２種類あります、鱗片で覆われたもの（この場合は茶色い点々）とそうでないもの。このヒマントーデスは、白い花が茶色の鱗片で覆われていて、とても珍しい外見です。初めてこの植物を見たとき、こんなシャクナゲが存在するとは思いもしなかった。シャクナゲって奥が深い！原産地は、マレーシアとインドネシアあたりです。実は、このシャクナゲ、職場のグリーンハウスに植えた直後に、挿し木用にか、誰かが切って持っていってしまいました。それだけ珍しい、ということだけど、植物園でそんな事をする人がいるなんて信じられません。それ以降、グリーンハウスに監視カメラをつけました。

Acer griseum

Common name of this tree is Paperbark Maple, and you will know why once you see this tree. This beautiful tree is one of my favorite maple trees. When the sun hits this tree in early morning, cinnamon-brown peeling bark glows as if it's shining. We have a beautiful specimen of this tree behind the Blue Poppy Meadow at RSBG. Leaves are trifoliate, and they turn orange-red in the fall.

This self-exfoliation occurs in several species of birch trees and even some rhododendrons. This feature gives great interest during winter when foliage is not present. Native to China.

この木の一般名は”紙のような樹皮の楓”です。一目見れば、なぜそう呼ばれているか分かるはず。（和名はグリセウムカエデのようです）朝早くに太陽がこの木を照らすと、樹皮がきらきら透き通って見えて、まるで輝いてるように見えます。ガーデンでは、青いヒマラヤのケシの後ろに大きいこの木があります。葉は三またで、秋にはオレンジっぽい赤に紅葉します。

この木の脱皮のような現象、決して水らしいものではなく、多くのカバノキや、あとシャクナゲもこのような樹皮のものがあるのです。落葉後の冬にも、ガーデンに色を加えてくれます。原産地は中国です。（下の写真の緑の球根は、巨大ゆりです。次はそのこと書くね！）

Primula sonchifolia

This rare primrose is in bloom at the RSBG right now. They thrive in cool environment and prefer damp soil. They are one of the earliest blooming primroses in our garden. I love the contrast of yellow center and pale purple petals of this species. Leaves start to grow after flowering. It seems to be hard to propagate though. We sow seeds in winter, but the germination rate is not very good. It's from Yunnan, China.

この珍しい桜草、いまガーデンで咲いてます。涼しい環境と、湿地帯をこのむこのプリムローズ、少しでも土が乾燥するとしおれてします。プリムローズの数ある種類の中で、一番早咲きです。このやさしい紫色がとても綺麗で好き。花の中心は黄色く、そのコントラストも綺麗です。花が終わると、葉が育ちだします。でも、繁殖するのが難しいのが難点。種を毎年まくけれど、発芽率があまりよくありません。種をクリーンするのも、手間がかかります。（種の掃除は、私の冬の仕事のひとつです）中国の雲南省が原産地です。
