This is one of my favorite vireyas, Rhododendron burtii. (I know, I have many favorites!) This dwarf rhody is native to Borneo and is not hardy outside in our Pacific Northwest climate. I just love this beautiful deep red flowers that hang at the end of the stem. Very charming! The flower is about an inch long, and covered with the short hair. I tried to take a close-up photo, but I didn't succeed...

このシャクナゲも好きな種の１つです。これはバーティアイという原種。ボルネオ島（東南アジアの島）で原生します。なので、もちろんここシアトルの気候で冬越しはできません。とってもチャーミングな濃い赤か朱色の花が茎からイアリングのようにぶら下がるように咲きます。花は2.5－3cmくらいで、短い毛で全体が覆われています。この花、クロースアップの写真を撮るのが難しい！何度も撮ったけどどれもピンボケしてました。野生でこんなにかわいい花があるなんてホント植物って魅力的。

Evaluation

 

 

This picture shows how we evaluate the flowers of one species. This is R. strigillosum flower evaluation. Notice some are darker in color, some have longer flowers than others, and the one on the bottom right has a very tubular flower shape. It's amazing how many different clones of one species we have at the garden, and how they differ from each other. We chose 'the garden's best' clone and then propagate that particular plant. We choose by the flower color, the flower size, and the shape of the truss.

 

 

この写真は、花の評価をしてるところです。これはR. strigillosumの花の評価。赤が濃かったり、朱色のようだったり、花の長さが違ったり。あと、右下のクローンはチューブ上の花の形してます。これだけ違いがあるとは、隣同士に並べてみないと分からなかった！このようにして、ガーデンで一番良い花をつけるクローンを選んで、それを繁殖させるのです。だって、みんな欲しがるのは濃い色の大きい花をつけるクローンでしょ。

In the name of research...

 

Wil and I visited Molbaks Nursery in Woodinvillle over the weekend. Wil had no interests in visiting nurseries, but he seemed enjoying especially after he found the cafe at the nursery! I wanted to see their rhododendron sections and see how they display and organize their sales area. Since it was a nice sunny day, there were lots of people at the nursery.

We found the most beautiful Mexican pots...I wanted to buy them all! I also wanted to buy my favorite Vanda orchid, but it was $70...a little to much. They also have really good gardening tools, books, and even doggy supplies! 

 
週末に、ウィルと一緒にウディンビルにある大きなナーセリー、モルバックスに行って来ました。ウィルはナーセリー訪問なんて興味ないけど、ナーセリーにあるカフェを見つけてなんだかんだ楽しそうにしてました。ローカルのチェリーソーダがおいしかったとか何とか（笑）私は、ナーセリーのシャクナゲコーナーのリサーチのために、どんなディスプレイをしてるとか、並べてる順序とか、いろいろ見てました。晴れてる日だったので、たくさんお客さんがいた。

とっても綺麗なメキシカンの植木鉢を見つけました。こんなカラフルな植木鉢、全部ほしいくらい。ほかにも、大好きなバンダという蘭を見つけたけど、７０ドルもするのであきらめました。蘭コーナーの前を行ったりきたりしてました。（ウィルがカフェにいる間にね）
ここのナーセリー、植物だけじゃなくて、ガーデニング用品や本、それに犬用コーナーまであります。見てるだけで楽しい！

It's been a while since I posted last time. The early blooming rhododendrons are showing color already. I am grateful for the very mild winter we had here in the Pacific Northwest. Here are some of the pictures of the early bloomers.

 

R. ririei is one of the first rhodys to bloom at the garden. They add beautiful purple-pink color this time of the year. The plant with darker pink flowers are the selected clone for the good flower color.

 

Ypsilandra thibetica is also blooming and giving away the sweet fragrance. As shown in the picture, their stamen is BLUE! Really odd, yet easy-to-grow plant!



Rhododendron strigillosum

 

R. strigillosum gives great deep red color in early spring. The clone in the picture has especially good red color. The foliage and petioles are covered with bristles. This is one of the easy-to-identify species for me.

 

I can't show all the pictures, but there are bunch more rhododendrons showing color. You just have to visit the garden to see them! This time of the year is my favorite because everything starts to grow again. Every week, I find something new blooming or showing color at the garden. 

 

 

久しぶりのポストです。早咲きのシャクナゲが開花してきたので写真載せます。今年の冬はとてもマイルドで、寒さに弱い種もダメージを受けずに春を迎えることができそうです。 

 

ロードデンドロンレイリアイは、ガーデンで一番最初にさくシャクナゲの１つです。ピンクっぽい紫色の花を咲かせ、この時期に華やかな色を添えます。写真の手前の、花の色の濃いのは、数ある中から選ばれたクローンです。

 

イプシランドラチベティカは、花によい芳香があります。写真で見れるように、この花の雄しべはなんと青いんです！とっても奇妙な、でもとても育てやすい植物です。

 

最後の写真は、ロードデンドロンストゥリジローサム。真っ赤な花を３月に咲かせます。葉っぱは、細かい毛に覆われてます。簡単に見分けられる種の１つです。

 

ほかにももっと咲いてるものあるけれど、ここではもちろん全て載せられません。この時期は、全てが再び成長し始める時期で、毎回ガーデンを歩くたびに発見があります。

 





Redondo Beach

家から２０分ほどに、ピュジェット湾に面したビーチとボードウォークがあります。霧がすごかったけど、ダーマをつれて土曜日の朝行って来ました。やっぱり水の側にいると落ち着く！磯の匂いもして、いいウォーキングになりました。ダーマはビーチが大好き！あちこち匂いをかいで忙しそうにしてました。

ちなみに、後ろに見える半島（？）がフェデラルウェイといって、私が毎日通勤してる市です。韓国の移民が多く、おいしいコリアンレストランがたくさんあります。

On Saturday morning, Wil and I took Darma to the Redondo Beach in Des Moines. There is a one mile board walk here. As you can see, it was a very foggy morning. Darma loves to walk on the beach! She was sniffing all over and keeping herself busy ;)

The land you see on the background is the city of Federal Way, where I work. There is a bunch of really good Korean restaurants!

It amazes me how fast time passes. It's almost the end of January...! It was really cold here in Seattle for couple of weeks, but finally "the normal weather" is back...meaning raining and somewhat warmish. I don't mind the rain much, but the cold, I can't take. When it's 32F outside, it's not fun to work outside at all! Well, I have a lot to do in the office, so that where I am when it's really cold outside.

あっという間に１月も終わりです。１月は２週間ほど氷点下の寒い日が続いたけれど、ようやく普通の天気に戻りました。（普通の天気というのは、日中に小雨が降るけれど、気温が７度くらいまで上がります。シアトルの冬は、雨が降らないと気温が非常に下がるのです。）雨が降るのはあまり気にならないけれど、気温が0度にもなると、さすがに外で仕事するのがきついです。なので、そんな日はオフィスでコンピューターで仕事してます。

Things are started to bloom in the garden. Hamamelis mollis (Winter witch hazel) started to bloom about a week ago, and the highly fragrant flowers give great addition this time of the year. Spring is almost here!!!

ガーデンでは、シナマンサクが咲き出しました。側を歩くたびにいい香りがします。春はもうすぐそこ！！



Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all! The weather is horrible here in Seattle...we have our fireplace lit since 8 am this morning. Darma got rawhide chews, razorback scarf, and a Christmas morning bath for gifts this year. I say she is a very happy spoiled doggy.

As for me, I got a sewing machine, Rachel Ray's new cook book, Kiehl's hand cream (best one I've ever tried) for Christmas. I hemmed three pairs of pants already!　We might drive around and look for the Christmas lights later today. If we do, we will post pictures!

メリークリスマス。シアトルの天気は大雨で寒いです。今朝８時からずーっと暖炉に火をたいてます。クリスマスの朝、ダーマはたくさんプレゼントもらいました！生皮の骨の形したの、アーカンソー大学のマスコットのイノシシのバンダナ、そしてクリスマスの朝シャンプー。ダーマは幸せな犬です。

私もプレゼントもらいました。新しいミシンと、料理本と、キールズのとても良いハンドクリーム。ミシンは早速使ってみて、ジーンズのすそ直しをしました。今日は暗くなってきたらクリスマスライトを見にドライブしてきます。

 

Applied to UW!!!

I haven't posted in a looooong time, but I thought I would mention that I turned in my application to the University of Washington for their PhD program in English Language and Rhetoric. Now I just have to wait until I hear back from them.

Swansons Nursery

Orchid show& plant sale

Wil and I visited Swansons Nursery in Seattle to check out the orchid show and sale. I really like orchids! I grow few at home, but I am still learning how to take care of them. When they bloom, it's so rewarding! At the orchid show, I was amazed by so many different kind of orchids. So many different sizes and colors.

今週末、ウィルを引きずってシアトルにあるスワンソンナーセリーに行ってきました。なぜなら、蘭の展示ショーとプラントセー  ルをやっていたから！蘭は奥が深くて好きな植物属のひとつです。家でいくつか育てているけど、まだまだビギナー。花が咲くととっても嬉しい！蘭は、サイズや色が本当に様々で、圧倒されます。いろいろな種類の蘭を買いたかったけど、やはり蘭は高いの でもう少し勉強してから集めます！

一杯のお茶をこんなマグから飲んだら一段とおいしそう。大好きなショップ、アンスロポロジーで前に売ってたけど、今はもうないと思う。。。モリーハッチというデザイナーで、彼女のセンスとっても素敵です。

Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Katsura Tree

 

This is one of my favorite trees from Japan. There are two mature Katsura trees in the garden and they are turning color to golden yellow right now. I love the fine texture of this tree. Believe or not, the fallen leaves smell like cotton candy or caramel! Some people even say they smell cinnamon. Every time I walk under this tree, it makes me hungry...One thing about this tree is, it's hard to grow anything underneath because of the fibrous root system. They suck a lot of water, so if you want to plant something underneath, you have to water plenty during the summer season. Also, the root system is not very deep, so they don't like to be disturbed. In my opinion, it worth having this tree though. Beautiful spring foliage, great texture, gorgeous fall color and on top of those, caramel smell in the fall!

カツラの木が好きです。ガーデンには大きなカツラが２本あります。今ちょうど黄金色に変わりだしてて、とても綺麗。繊細な質感も好き。なんと、落葉し始める時期、カラメルの匂いが落ちた葉からします。シナモンの香り、という人もいるようです。この木の下を歩くたび、おなかがすくくらい！カツラの根は非常に髭根で、水をたくさん吸います。なので、木の下になにか植えるとなると、夏場の水遣りはかかせません。それと、根があまり深くないため、土を掘って根の成長を阻害させられることを嫌います。でも、この木を植える価値はあると思う。春の新緑はライムグリーン、秋には黄金色、そしてカラメルの香り！アメリカでは割りに人気の高い木です。

Fabric

Wil and I went to the Bainbridge Island yesterday. We took a ferry from Seattle and it takes 40 minutes.We usually go to this amazing restaurant called Cafe Nola and have brunch there. I had my usual french toast that is out of this world! Here is the recipe it anybody is interested.

昨日、ベインブリッジ島へ行ってきました。シアトルからフェリーで４０分くらいのミニ旅行。たいてい、カフェノラというレストランでブランチします。ここのフレンチトーストがとってもおいしい！レシピ見つけました。

ブランチの後ぶらぶら歩いて、ローカルの小さなお店で布を買いました。なに作るかまだ分からないけど、この布の色とデザインがとても好き！

I just bought this dog treat from Trader Joe's. The black lab on the package looks just like Darma! The way she hangs her tongue is identical ;)

今日スーパーで買った犬のお菓子。パッケージの黒ラボがダーマそっくり！！特に、舌をだらーんと横に出すところがまったく同じ。ダーマ、いつモデルになったの～？
