Fabric

Wil and I went to the Bainbridge Island yesterday. We took a ferry from Seattle and it takes 40 minutes.We usually go to this amazing restaurant called Cafe Nola and have brunch there. I had my usual french toast that is out of this world! Here is the recipe it anybody is interested.

We walked around after the brunch and I bought these fabrics from a small local shop. I'm not sure what I'm going to make, but I love the textile! Stay tuned for the finished product...

昨日、ベインブリッジ島へ行ってきました。シアトルからフェリーで４０分くらいのミニ旅行。たいてい、カフェノラというレストランでブランチします。ここのフレンチトーストがとってもおいしい！レシピ見つけました。

ブランチの後ぶらぶら歩いて、ローカルの小さなお店で布を買いました。なに作るかまだ分からないけど、この布の色とデザインがとても好き！

Darma, the model

I just bought this dog treat from Trader Joe's. The black lab on the package looks just like Darma! The way she hangs her tongue is identical ;)

今日スーパーで買った犬のお菓子。パッケージの黒ラボがダーマそっくり！！特に、舌をだらーんと横に出すところがまったく同じ。ダーマ、いつモデルになったの～？

Homemade Blackberry Jam!

Every summer, we pick blackberries from wild. Here in Washington, Rubus discolor, the Himalayan Blackberry is classified as noxious weed. I pull bunch of seedlings at the garden. We have a bike trail behind our apartment building and that's always a good spot to pick blackberries. The important thing to remember is to wear long pants and long sleeve shirt. Otherwise thorns will get you!

Wil and I picked bagful of berries, so I decided to make blackberry jam. It turned out really good! I found this website where you can make your own label.

毎年、私たちは野生のブラックベリーを摘みます。ここワシントン州では、ブラックベリーは雑草です。ガーデンで毎日のようにブラックベリーを引っこ抜いてるくらい。アパートの裏のバイクトレイルにブラックベリーがたくさん生えてるので、そこで毎年摘みます。ただ、長袖長ズボンをはかないと棘に引っかかれます。

ウィルと、ダーマの散歩中に摘むので、あっという間にバッグがいっぱいになります。というわけで、今年もジャムを作りました。ペクチン入れて本格的に。あと、自分のジャムのラベルを作れるサイトも発見して作りました。ジャムは、近いうちに家族に送る予定です。

Plant Explorer!

Taken in North Carolina, before we headed to the airport to go back to Seattle. This is Craggy Garden, along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We took a short hike from the parking area and this is where we ended up. I felt like I was in China! Plants surrounding me are Rhododendron catawbiense.

ノースカロライナの出張の写真。これは、シアトルに帰る日に、空港に行く前に寄ったクラギーガーデンというハイキング。駐車場から３０分くらい歩いて、ここにたどり着きました。中国にいるような気分でした！周りの石楠花は、東海岸に原生するカタビエンシというシャクナゲ。

 

Happy 4th!

On July 4th, we saw fireworks from this spot, which is about 10 minutes walk from where we live. This is a great spot to see the Lake Union fireworks and the Landing fireworks without being in a crowd! We were able to see Bellevue fireworks from here too. There were 20 neighbours or so brought lawn chairs to enjoy the evening. Poor Darma was freaked out by the exploding noise that has been going on since the night before.

独立記念日の４日は、あちこちで花火大会があり、家の近くの絶景スポットから鑑賞しました。ここは、３つの花火大会を同時に見れるというスポット。でも、近所の人しか知らない穴場なので、そんなに込みません。なにしろ歩いていけるし。２０人くらいのご近所さんが折りたたみのいすを持ってきてました。ダーマは、前日から聞こえる花火の音が怖くて、私のそばを離れません。

Cardiocrinum giganteum in bloom!



13feet 9 inches!

Cardiocrinum giganteum, the Giant Himalayan Lily has finally started to bloom this week at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden. The tallest one measured 13 feet 9 inches, which means it grew 1 foot since last week. The flowers come out in light green , and eventually fade to pure white. They are very fragrant, like most of lilies are. They do not like heat and sun exposure though.

In our Blue Poppy Meadow, we have 10 of Cardiocrinum giganteum in bloom, and 4 of Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense just starting to bloom. Total of 14 giant lilies in bloom...that's not something you can see everyday. If you are in the Puget Sound area, I strongly recommend to visit the garden in next two weeks or so. Who would have thought lilies could grow that tall!!

ガーデンで、ヒマラヤの巨大ユリがついに咲き出しました。一番背が高いのを計測したところ、なんと4.2メートル！一週間で30cm成長してる。花は、最初は薄緑のような色だけど、次第に真っ白へと変わります。他のユリのように強い香りがあるけれど、このユリは直射日光や高温を嫌います。

ガーデンでは、今2種類の巨大ユリが咲いています。ヒマラヤ産のと中国産のとをあわせると、計14本です。中国原産の巨大ユリは、ヒマラヤのよりも開花が遅いです。花が咲いたら写真を撮って違いをのせます～。

Messy Drinker!

 あいのおもちゃを母がダーマにと送ってくれました。ピンクのおもちゃは、親友の涼子がクリスマスにあいにくれたもの。下の写真のランチョマット(ピンクの）は、あいが施設を出るときにお世話になった方が作ってくれたものです。こんなにあいを思ってくれる人がいて、あいは幸せものだね。

ダーマは、新しいおもちゃには目がなく、さっさと自分のベッドに持っていってキュッキュしてました。あと、ダーマは水飲むときたくさん水をこぼすので、ランチョマット下に大きいマットをしきました。大事に使います。
