Taken in North Carolina, before we headed to the airport to go back to Seattle. This is Craggy Garden, along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We took a short hike from the parking area and this is where we ended up. I felt like I was in China! Plants surrounding me are Rhododendron catawbiense.

ノースカロライナの出張の写真。これは、シアトルに帰る日に、空港に行く前に寄ったクラギーガーデンというハイキング。駐車場から３０分くらい歩いて、ここにたどり着きました。中国にいるような気分でした！周りの石楠花は、東海岸に原生するカタビエンシというシャクナゲ。

 

Happy 4th!

On July 4th, we saw fireworks from this spot, which is about 10 minutes walk from where we live. This is a great spot to see the Lake Union fireworks and the Landing fireworks without being in a crowd! We were able to see Bellevue fireworks from here too. There were 20 neighbours or so brought lawn chairs to enjoy the evening. Poor Darma was freaked out by the exploding noise that has been going on since the night before.

独立記念日の４日は、あちこちで花火大会があり、家の近くの絶景スポットから鑑賞しました。ここは、３つの花火大会を同時に見れるというスポット。でも、近所の人しか知らない穴場なので、そんなに込みません。なにしろ歩いていけるし。２０人くらいのご近所さんが折りたたみのいすを持ってきてました。ダーマは、前日から聞こえる花火の音が怖くて、私のそばを離れません。

13feet 9 inches!

Cardiocrinum giganteum, the Giant Himalayan Lily has finally started to bloom this week at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden. The tallest one measured 13 feet 9 inches, which means it grew 1 foot since last week. The flowers come out in light green , and eventually fade to pure white. They are very fragrant, like most of lilies are. They do not like heat and sun exposure though.

In our Blue Poppy Meadow, we have 10 of Cardiocrinum giganteum in bloom, and 4 of Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense just starting to bloom. Total of 14 giant lilies in bloom...that's not something you can see everyday. If you are in the Puget Sound area, I strongly recommend to visit the garden in next two weeks or so. Who would have thought lilies could grow that tall!!

ガーデンで、ヒマラヤの巨大ユリがついに咲き出しました。一番背が高いのを計測したところ、なんと4.2メートル！一週間で30cm成長してる。花は、最初は薄緑のような色だけど、次第に真っ白へと変わります。他のユリのように強い香りがあるけれど、このユリは直射日光や高温を嫌います。

ガーデンでは、今2種類の巨大ユリが咲いています。ヒマラヤ産のと中国産のとをあわせると、計14本です。中国原産の巨大ユリは、ヒマラヤのよりも開花が遅いです。花が咲いたら写真を撮って違いをのせます～。

Messy Drinker!

 あいのおもちゃを母がダーマにと送ってくれました。ピンクのおもちゃは、親友の涼子がクリスマスにあいにくれたもの。下の写真のランチョマット(ピンクの）は、あいが施設を出るときにお世話になった方が作ってくれたものです。こんなにあいを思ってくれる人がいて、あいは幸せものだね。

ダーマは、新しいおもちゃには目がなく、さっさと自分のベッドに持っていってキュッキュしてました。あと、ダーマは水飲むときたくさん水をこぼすので、ランチョマット下に大きいマットをしきました。大事に使います。

Blue Poppies

 Picture says it all. The beauty of nature is just stunning. I would love to see this plant in wild someday! This particular blue poppies are Meconopsis 'Lingholm', which is the cross of M. betonicifolia and M. grandis. The secrets to grow this plant is,
1. They like rich soil
2. They like fertilizer
3. They dislike heat
4. Keep them watered during the summer season
 
 
 この植物が野生で育っているのをいつか見てみたい！とっても綺麗なこのケシ、今がピークです。この植物を育てるコツは、肥えた土に植える事、しっかり肥料をやる事、暑さから避ける事、そして夏場に水を欠かさない事。この４点さえ押さえれば、毎年花を咲かせるはずです。ただ、暑さが苦手なこのケシの花、アメリカでも育てられる地域は少なく、蒸し暑い東京ではまず育てられません。英国でも、スコットランドでは育てられても、ロンドンまで南下すると暑すぎて育てられない、と聞きました。

Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid



Cypripedium acaule

This is one of the plants that I saw in North Carolina. This Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid was at the Bildmore Estate Garden. I was on the tour with the horticulturist and he took us off the trail to see this special patch of wild flower. This is a pretty common wild flower, but it's very beautiful.

Yellow lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus parviflorum) is also native to Appalachian Mountains, but unfortunately I was not able to see that in wild.
Other plant that I was very excited to see was Trillium grandiflorum, Large-flowered Trillium. The very last day we were there, we took a drive to north of Asheville on Blue Ridge Parkway before we had to head to the airport. On the way to the airport, I spotted this patch of Trillium and I had to pull over! We actually sell this plant at the RSBG nursery, so it was interesting to see this plant in wild. I was absolutely gorgeous! believe or not, this pure 　　white flower turns or pink or rose color before it fades.


Trillium grandiflorum

この蘭は、ノースカロライナにいるときにビルトモア・エステートの敷地内のガーデンで見ました。そこの園芸家にツアーをしてもらっていて、彼が特別な蘭がある、と見せてくれました。アメリカ東部では割と普通に見かける野草らしいけれど、とっても可憐で素敵な花！

キバナノアツモリソウ、この花の黄色バージョンも野生で見れるらしいけど、残念ながら私たちは見る事ができませんでした。（北海道でまれに見る事ができるそう）

見れて良かったもう１つの野草は、エンレイソウ！シアトルに帰る日、午前中時間があったのでBlue Ridge Parkwayをアッシュビルの北のほうへドライブしてたら、トリリウムが目に留まって車を止めました。坂一面に白い花は咲いてて、とっても綺麗でしたー！実はこの植物、職場のナーセリーで販売してるので、野生で育ってる姿を見れて良かったです。この白い花、しおれる頃にはピンク色に変わります。ウッドランドガーデンに最適な植物です。



Sam Knob Hike

シアトルに帰る前日、一緒に旅行してたクラリスとノースカロライナの山にハイキングしてきました。頂上に上る途中、たくさんのワイルドフラワーを見てたくさん写真とった！中でも、野生のブルーベリーやアジサイ、あともちろんシャクナゲも。思ってたより「これは何の植物、きっと何科に属するだろう」と分かって、自信がついた～！植物博士のボスのおかげです。頂上からの景色は絶景でした。

Mensiesia pilosa

I hiked with my travel mate, Clarice, the day before we flew back to Seattle. We chose Sam Knob's hiking trail since that was recommended by local hikers. The view from the top of the mountain was just stunning!! Supposedly, we were able to see three states from there. Here is the link to more information of the hiking trail.
